What is a lithophane?
A lithophane is a thin, 3D printed picture that reveals a glowing image when light shines through it from behind. The picture is baked into the thickness of the plastic: thick areas stay dark, thin areas let the light through and glow. The result is a personalised photo lamp with real depth — like a photograph turned into a light box.
Lithophanes have been around since the 1820s, when they were carved from porcelain. Today, 3D printing makes them easy, affordable and completely personal: you send us a photo, we turn it into a lithophane, and you get a glowing keepsake in a few days.
How does a lithophane work?
Instead of printing a flat picture with ink, a 3D printer prints a picture in height. Every pixel of your photo becomes a tiny tile of plastic of a different thickness:
- Dark parts of the photo are printed thicker, so little light passes through.
- Bright parts are printed thinner, so a lot of light shines through.
- Backlit by an LED, the differences in thickness recreate the whole image in glowing light.
This is why a lithophane looks flat and unremarkable in normal daylight — and magical the moment you switch the light on.
Which photos make the best lithophanes?
Not every photo works equally well. To get the sharpest, most emotional result, pick a picture that:
- Has high contrast between light and dark areas.
- Is sharp and high resolution (more than 1000 px wide).
- Works well in black and white — portraits and silhouettes are stunning.
The classic winners are baby portraits, wedding photos, pets, and family pictures. If you send a blurry or very dark photo, we will let you know before printing.
