PLA vs PETG: the short answer
PLA is the right choice for most decorative prints — it is easy to print, looks smooth and comes in many colours. Choose PETG when you need strength, heat or weather resistance. For lithophanes, figures, dragons and planters, PLA is usually perfect.
What is PLA?
PLA (polylactic acid) is the most popular 3D printing material in the world. It is made from renewable sources like corn starch, prints reliably, and produces a clean, smooth surface with crisp detail. It is also odourless while printing.
PLA is best for:
- Decorative prints — dragons, figures, book nooks
- Lithophanes and photo lamps (thinnest areas glow brightest)
- Gifts and desk accessories
- Prototypes and visual models
What is PETG?
PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) is a tougher cousin of the plastic used in water bottles. It resists heat, moisture and impact much better than PLA, but prints with a slightly glossier, less crisp surface.
PETG is best for:
- Outdoor items — the summer sun will not soften it
- Functional parts, brackets, mounts
- Anything that will touch water or humidity
- Mechanical and protective parts
